My Bio

Welcome to my deviantArt corner of the world!

I'm a sci-fantasy/horror writer and digital artist, believing that imagination and creativity is what makes the world go 'round.

My writing is more about the monsters within people, rather than fantastic beasts bearing dripping fangs and razor-sharp claws - though these elements of monstrosity exist in my characters without the gory visuals. My characters are emotional, carnal, living and breathing. They are alive, but are not separated by typical aspects of good and evil. I believe there is good and evil in everyone, and that the exhibition of one or the other more prominently is based on circumstance and influence - and that finding the 'good' or 'evil' is based entirely on that character's environment, circumstances, influences, and their choices. But ultimately, they are judged by everyone else around them - making them 'good' or 'evil'.

Here are a few of my favorite authors: Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, Stephen King, Anne McCaffrey, HP Lovecraft, Robert Howard, Clive Barker

My art is a mix of visuals I have for characters and environments in my stories, as well as just every day thoughts that I have of life and people. I can't say I have a definitive form or technique - I like having options, so I choose to find and use many techniques and tools to achieve results. I'm not a fan of pigeon-holing, though we do find ourselves being tossed into categories that we may or may not agree with. It's why on deviantArt I simply put most of my art in the Miscellaneous section, but I know that I am digitally creating it today, so I am happy with the Digital Art category here.

I started drawing in the '80s, with just a #2 pencil and a piece of paper. I eventually worked my way into b/w pencil sets, blending stumps, and textured sketch paper. In the years that followed I dabbled with colored pencil, but it never achieved (for me) what b/w did. In the late '90s I began doing digital art, using a mouse, Jasc software, and whoa! . . . color. In 2007 I bought the Wacom3 tablet, Corel's Painter X, and I haven't looked back. I could do then (and do today!) b/w, color, and everything I imagined with my tools now.

Here are a few of my favorite artists: Luis Royo, Boris Vellejo, Daniel Dociu, Frank Frazetta, H.R.Giger, Doug Williams

We all have an artist inside us. Don't be afraid to make mistakes along the way. It's what makes us stronger, and makes us who we are. Young, or old.

Please be respectful with your comments here. I don't mind criticism and critique. I don't stand for immature and belligerent. Thank you.

Sincerely,

DEHughes
